About Us

Local waste solution

Enviroglass is based in the far north of Scotland on the Shetland Islands, an hour long flight or a 14 hour ferry journey from the Scottish mainland. Given our remote location we have to find local solutions to waste problems, as shipping waste to the UK mainland for recycling has both financial and environmental costs.

Enviroglass was established in 2003 by the Shetland Amenity Trust, a charitable trust with a wide environmental and heritage remit, to provide a local solution for waste glass and recycle all of the glass collected by the local authority. From initial production of a basic aggregate substitute, the Trust developed a range of innovative recycled products and won awards for it’s precast paving and environmental credentials.

In 2017, the Trust leased Enviroglass to a local family business experienced in the precast industry, Shetland Precast and Groundworks Limited. This lease agreement enables Enviroglass to expand and offer new services, such as laying slabs, and enabled Shetland Precast and Groundworks Limited to scale up their business and expand their product range.

Benefits of recycling locally

By recycling Shetland’s waste glass in the islands, Enviroglass helps make Shetland a more self-sufficient society and is key in supporting the delivery of local waste plans and meeting national recycling targets.  Recycling the glass within the isles also adds value to the local economy, providing jobs and utilising other local suppliers and services.
